Hyde's Herbal Clinic was founded in 1908 by Frederick Jesse Hyde and his wife, Maude Hyde, who established one of Leicester's pioneering medical herbal practices.

As demand for the practice grew, the clinic expanded from its original premises on St Peter's Road to its purpose-built home at 68 London Road, Leicester, which officially opened in 1934. This beautiful building remains the home of Hyde's Herbal Clinic today.

Advancing Herbal Medicine

Frederick Jesse Hyde's son, Frederick Fletcher Hyde, became one of the most influential figures in British herbal medicine.

After completing a degree in Chemistry and graduating with First Class Honours in Botany from the University of London, he dedicated his career not only to patient care but also to advancing the entire profession.

Throughout his distinguished career he served as:

• President of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists (1967–1975)

• Chairman of the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia Committee

• President of the British Herbal Medicine Association

• Director of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists' Research and Analytical Department for more than 30 years

• Advisor to the Ministry of Health on the safety and regulation of herbal medicines

 

 

His tireless work helped establish professional standards for herbal medicine in the UK while protecting patients' freedom to choose natural, plant-based healthcare. In recognition of his extraordinary contribution, the British Herbal Medicine Association posthumously awarded him its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. The commemorative plaque remains proudly displayed within the clinic today, serving as a reminder of his lasting impact on herbal medicine.
